Department Summary

The Environmental Department is instrumental in ensuring that Secaucus promotes initiatives and programs to help preserve our environment thereby making Secaucus a sustainable place to live for future generations.  It serves as an advisor to the Mayor and Town Council on local environmental issues and to act as a resource for businesses and individuals in Secaucus who are interested in going green. 

Environmental Department Responsibilities
  • All recycling efforts, information, and reports regarding recycling;
  • Community organizing regarding environmental issues and environmental education;
  • Applying for and reporting on grants that the town has been awarded for projects such as Recreational Open Space Inventories, Community Stewardship Incentive Program, community garden and food waste opportunities; 
  • Introducing Secaucus energy initiatives including; energy audits & upgrades, fleet inventories, electric vehicle charging stations, municipal energy aggregation, residential solar access, and participating in Hudson County’s microgrid pilot program.
  • Serving as Secaucus’ liaison to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as well as other state environmental agencies;
  • Enforcing any environmentally-related laws enacted by the State of NJ or the Town of Secaucus;
  • Ensure continued re-certification with Sustainable Jersey;
  • Work with Secaucus Environmental Committee on various environmental campaigns;
  • Partnering with Secaucus schools and Shade Tree Committee for the annual Arbor Day Celebration.
  • Coordinating with the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA) regarding mobile shredding and hazardous waste days for Secaucus;
