4-17-20 Message from the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control Regarding License Renewals

On behalf of everyone at the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, I hope this email finds you in good health. This message is for municipal clerks and local ABC board secretaries. We recognize the effect of the current public health State of Emergency on our municipalities and alcoholic beverage industry, particularly on the retail consumption businesses. In order to soften the impact, I have entered an order extending the 2019 – 2020 license term of all municipal and State licenses and State Issued Permits until September 30, 2020. All licensees must complete the renewal process on or before September 30, 2020.  https://www.nj.gov/oag/abc/downloads/Order-extending-2019-20-municipal-and-state-liquor-licenses-and-permits-to-Sept-30-2020.pdf

The Division is preparing to send license renewal notifications shortly. Currently, however, the renewal option is NOT available in POSSE. We expect to make it available within the next several weeks and, as in the past, you will be notified by email.

Please note: The Division will now require that all Petitions for Relief under N.J.S.A. 33:1-12.18 (Failure to Timely Renew) and N.J.S.A. 33:1-12.39 (Renewal of Inactive or “Pocket” Licenses) be submitted in PDF format to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and all fees be paid online via the POSSE online licensing system. Additional information will be available on the Division website. https://www.nj.gov/oag/abc/index.html

Please also note that until further notice, licensed bars and restaurants may offer take-out or delivery only and only during regular posted business hours. Alcoholic beverages for off premise consumption must be in sealed original containers. Absolutely no table or bar service and no on premise alcohol consumption are permitted. Customers and employees must wear face coverings. Our goal is to educate licensees to ensure compliance. More information at https://www.nj.gov/oag/abc/index.html

Please convey this information to your licensees along with renewal information typically provided each year including notice of meeting dates when renewals will be considered and other items your town may require.

We value our working relationship with our municipal partners and we are here to assist you in any way we can. Thank you for your cooperation.
